A 24-year-old man is charged in a crash that killed a pedestrian Monday afternoon in Bethlehem, according to officials.
Gian Bajandas Correa, of Allentown, hit a vehicle before hitting the pedestrian about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Daly Avenue and Wind Creek Boulevard, city police said in a news release. The pedestrian was walking a bicycle through a marked intersection when hit, authorities said.
Bajandas Correa ran away from the scene toward the Minsi Trail Bridge and was arrested there shortly after, the release states. The pedestrian suffered critical injuries and was taken to St. Luke’s University Hospital in Fountain Hill, where they died from their injuries.
The driver of the other car suffered minor injuries.
Investigators determined Bajandas Correa was driving his car fast on Lynn Avenue before turning onto Daly Avenue, and that he crossed the double-yellow line to pass a vehicle and lost traction while doing so, police said.
He was traveling westbound on Daly Avenue, still driving fast, when he hit a vehicle that was going through the intersection at Daly Avenue and Wind Creek Boulevard, the release states. Bajandas Correa then hit the pedestrian in the crosswalk, according to authorities.
Bajandas Correa admitted to using his cellphone while driving, and taking a controlled substance before getting behind the wheel, police said. Officials took a blood draw and are awaiting results.
Bajandas Correa is charged with homicide by vehicle, accidents involving death or personal injury, accidents involving damage to vehicle or property, reckless driving, reckless driving, and summary traffic offenses. Additional charges may be filed after the blood test results come back.
Bajandas Correa was sent to Northampton County Prison on $250,000 bail.
