Newly married NFL star Travis Kelce sparked a tidal wave of headlines with his recent $5.35 million purchase of a 21,000-square-foot mansion outside of Cleveland. The sale created so much buzz that search interest in Bratenahl—the tiny Ohio village fronting Lake Erie where the home is located—exploded more than 5,000 percent in the days that followed, according to Google Trends.
The move, however, might not have come as a total surprise: Last year, Kelce and now-wife Taylor Swift were spotted house hunting in the nearby village of Chagrin Falls, near where Kelce grew up. While it’s not clear how much time the couple plans on spending in Cuyahoga County, the pint-sized community is now firmly in the spotlight. See below for more intel.
Where Is Bratenahl?

Set directly on Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes, Bratenahl is an independent village with a population of 1,400, located just six miles northeast of downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Occupying a thin strip of land about half a mile wide and four miles long, the leafy Cuyahoga County community is less than a square mile in area and borders Cleveland on three sides.
What Is the History of Bratenahl?

The area that forms Bratenahl today originated as rural farmland in the mid-19th century, home to about two dozen families including that of Charles Bratenahl, the landowner and the town’s namesake. The enclave developed further during the Gilded Age, in the years following the Civil War, as a summer retreat where wealthy Cleveland industrialists built large mansions along the lakefront.
Bratenahl was incorporated as an independent village in 1903, in part to avoid annexation by Cleveland. Its main drag, Lake Shore Boulevard, is lined with trees and runs the entire length of the town, connecting to many of the waterfront estates, like the one Kelce just bought.
In the mid-20th century, pro-segregation sentiment plagued the village, contributing to its campaign to keep its school district separate from Cleveland. Bratenahl dissolved its independent school district in 1980.
Bratenahl has always maintained a steady population, peaking in 1960 at 1,613 residents. While real estate development is a contentious topic, new multifamily projects have come to fruition, such as Newport Harbor—with its members-only Shoreby Club—and One Bratenahl Place.

Bratenahl has long been a haven for “chief executives, actors, and professional athletes,” per The New York Times. Most of the top-earning residents, however, don’t live there full-time. The median household income is $137,500 per year, nearly double that of the surrounding metro area.
Swift and Kelce’s new house has its own pedigree. Dubbed Moyenage, the 1904 Elizabethan Tudor was once home to iron and steel baron Jay Morse as well as George Martin, the onetime president of Sherwin-Williams.
Among the more recent residents of Bratenahl is former Cleveland Cavaliers star Tristan Thompson, who lived in a $1.9 million lakeside mansion with Khloé Kardashian.
Homecoming for Kelce

The purchase of Moyenage is a homecoming of sorts for Kelce, who was born in Westlake and raised in nearby Cleveland Heights. He attended the University of Cincinnati from 2008 to 2012 and joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. Kelce made his first real estate purchase six years later, snapping up a nearly $1 million home in Kansas City’s Briarcliff West neighborhood. In 2023, he upgraded to a $6 million French Regency–inspired mansion in the upscale suburb of Leawood, Kansas.
Swift, meanwhile, oversees a $150 million real estate empire that includes multiple New York City properties, a palatial oceanfront mansion in Rhode Island, and a trio of Los Angeles homes. While we don’t yet know if the pair will be moving in permanently or using Moyenage as a pied-à-terre, we do know that this pair understands real estate all too well.
