Pittsburgh’s Rialto Street set to close for 1-2 months as crews work on Lowrie Street Bridge
Iconic Pittsburgh street will be closed to traffic during bridge repairs in Troy Hill
PITTSBURGH —
Rialto Street in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood will close for one to two months starting Monday as crews work to complete repairs on the Lowrie Street Bridge.
The Lowrie Street Bridge underwent concrete beam and deck replacements in 2020, but officials say the project remains unfinished.
“The Lowrie Street Bridge has been rated in poor condition since 2023, and that’s due to the condition of the masonry substructure,” said Zach Workman, deputy director of the city’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.
Crews will replace stones, repoint masonry and clean the bridge as part of the repairs, Workman said.

The city of Pittsburgh is responsible for several bridges, and Mayor Corey O’Connor emphasized the importance of staying on top of those projects.
“You have a lot of bridges that we use each and every day that impact us. So for us, looking towards the future, we have to make sure that they’re stable, and then we also have a plan to invest in them, because we know there are so many that are in deplorable condition in so many ways that it’s going to take time to fix them. It’s not going to happen overnight,” O’Connor said.
Workman acknowledged the inconvenience the closure may cause but said the repairs are necessary before winter.
“The grouting, the repointing of the masonry — these are things that you wouldn’t really want to be doing in freezing temperatures, so we have to get that out of the way when it’s warmer weather,” Workman said.
During the closure of Rialto Street, drivers traveling to and from Troy Hill will be detoured via Route 28, Chestnut Street and Troy Hill Road.
Pedestrians will still be able to walk up and down Rialto Street, and the Lowrie Street Bridge will remain open for both cars and pedestrians throughout the project.
