September is Suicide Prevention Month
Editor: Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis deserves three things: somewhere to call, someone to respond, and somewhere to go. September is Suicide Prevention Month, making it the ideal time to highlight the critical resources available to our community.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a vital piece of this puzzle. Since its launch in July 2022, the lifeline has fielded more than 23 million calls, texts, and chats nationwide. This free, confidential service connects individuals with immediate, dignified support 24/7. Yet, millions of people still struggle in silence, unaware that help is just three digits away.
While 988 delivers “somewhere to call and someone to respond,” our local network provides “somewhere to go.” In our region, the Scranton Counseling Center and the Northeast Regional Crisis Stabilization Center in Honesdale offer essential 24-hour walk-in crisis support.
No problem is too small, and no one has to carry their emotional distress alone. Whatever your reason, it is reason enough to reach out. We must continue to spread the word about these lifelines to ensure no neighbor faces a crisis in isolation.
