BETHLEHEM – Enjoy an afternoon of observing and recording the abundance of beautiful trees on the Caroline Ferriday Preserve, 45 Main Street N., Bethlehem, owned and managed by the Bethlehem Land Trust.

The event will take place on Sunday, September 27 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. rain or shine

After first discussing tips for journaling and observing with Betsy Rogers-Knox and Nancy McMillan, you will venture outside with your journals to explore and draw observations of tree structure, leaves, bark, nuts and pods, as well as collect sensory details of your experience.

This will be followed by a writing session incorporating prompts, led by Nancy, then guided by Betsy. You will complete your sketches by adding color to your work. You will leave with a keepsake of an autumn day in nature.

This workshop is a Bethlehem Land Trust fundraiser and all proceeds will benefit the BLT.

the workshop is open to individuals at all levels. The fee for the workshop is $45 for adults and $30 for students under 14

Betsy Rogers-Knox earned a certificate in botanical illustration from the New York Botanical Garden and is enchanted by the full life cycle of plants and their habitats. Her work has been shown widely in the US including the 13th-26h ASBA International Exhibitions and 3r-5th NYBG Triennial Exhibitions. Betsy received the London RHS Botanical Art Judges Special Award for the educational and ecological value of her paintings of Beckley Bog in 2019. She received a gold medal at the 2024-25 RHS Exhibition. Her work is held in permanent collection at the RHS Lindley Library in London and at the Hunt Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. Nancy McMillan is the author of March Farm: Season by Season on a Connecticut Farm and is a pushcart prize nominee (CT Lit Anthology 2020). Litchfield Magazine has published her feature stories, one of which placed first in the CT Press Club 2022 Contest. Her work has appeared in the Toronto Journal, Pangyrus, the Sunlight Press, Persimmon Tree, and Edible Nutmeg. Her poetry has appeared in the Gilded Weathervane and CT Bards Review. Nancy holds an MA degree in writing from the Graduate Institute and has studied in the MFA program at Manhattanville College. She is at work on a memoir and seeking publication of a novel.
