EMMAUS, Pa. – Jamaica is only just beginning to clean up after deadly Hurricane Melissa slammed into the island ten days ago.
The Jamaican government has confirmed 32 people died in the storm.
One-and-a-half million people, more than half of the country’s population is directly affected.
Now, the Jamaican community is coming together to help their homeland.
The owner of Vibes Caribbean Cuisine in Emmaus, Tasha Spence, is going to hold a fundraiser Saturday night and send the money back home.
Thoughts of home are never far from Spence. She has family and friends in Saint Elizabeth Parish, where hurricane Melissa made landfall decimating the Jamaican shore.
“It’s bad to the point where you can’t even get to the people. Everything is shut down, blocked off, and food is scarce,” Spence said. “So the major thing now is to get people food and to clear the roadways.”
The United Nations estimates Hurricane Melissa generated almost 5 million tons of debris. On Saturday, Vibes will hold a Karaoke fundraiser.
“We have a lot of women raising children, a lot of men raising children on their own and also a lot of old people,” said Spence.
There is a way for anyone to send groceries on demand. On Long Island, Sam’s Caribbean Marketplace has the “Bread and Butter” express, a service that delivers directly.
Anyone can send. Everyone can benefit.
“A lot of people here in the States, they send money to help their folks back home, so why not send groceries?” said owner Andrew Morris.
Owner Andrew Morris says orders have more than tripled since Hurricane Melissa.
“There’s a great need, and people are just coming in from everywhere, and, placing orders and trying to get things to their loved ones. It’s taking longer now than it used to, because everything has changed,” said Morris.
Where it took trucks before the storm, now supplies are getting to isolated areas by courier. With the island at a crisis point, Spence says now is the time to help.
“Because the country is in need,” said Spence.
If you want to place an order of groceries to send directly to Jamaica, just go to breadandbutterexpress.com, the website run by Sam’s Caribbean.
If you want to donate at Vibes, they are located at 1301 Chestnut Street here in Emmaus.
And the Karaoke Fundraiser will take place here from 6 to 9 Saturday night.
