PENNSYLVANIA (WHP) — Pennsylvania schools will now be required to give younger students time to take a break from learning and “just be kids,” according to Gov. Josh Shapiro.

On Wednesday, Shapiro and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis visited North Wales Elementary School in Montgomery County for a ceremonial signing of House Bill 1505, which would require kindergarten through fifth grade students to receive at least 30 minutes of recess each day, starting in 2027.

Before this year, Pennsylvania schools were not required to give students dedicated recess time each day, according to Shapiro.

“In my eyes, recess is just as important as learning math, English, science, or history — recess is crucial for things like building social skills and staying active. And now, we’re making sure our kids have the tools they need to succeed both inside AND outside the classroom,” Shapiro wrote on social media Wednesday.

North Wales Borough took to Facebook to thank Shapiro and Davis for choosing North Wales to be a part of the recess fun.

“It was exciting to see North Wales chosen to host this statewide announcement and our local school community take part in the occasion. Thank you to the students, teachers, staff and everyone who helped welcome our visitors to the Borough,” the Borough wrote.
