After months of questions and thousands of signatures on Erie resident Nick Pallotto’s petition to reopen the South Erie Post Office, the U.S. Postal Service has provided a timeline.
In a letter to U.S. Sen. John Fetterman and U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, USPS said repairs are expected to begin in October and be completed by mid-November.
The South Erie Station has been closed since last year for repairs and renovations and because the building is leased, the landlord is responsible for the work, according to USPS.
Once repairs are complete, Pennsylvania 1 Postal District management says it will move to reopen the station as quickly as possible. Customers will be notified when a specific reopening date is set.
In the meantime, customers can use the Presque Isle Post Office for retail and P.O. Box services. Mail delivery to South Erie customers continues as normal.
USPS apologized for the inconvenience and noted that construction timelines can be affected by contracting, supply, logistics and weather issues.
