Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program needs better DOH oversight, audit finds
Pennsylvania Auditor General Tim DeFoor says he found a weakness in the state’s oversight of the medical marijuana program.
A new audit from DeFoor concluded that the Department of Health did not always properly document inspections, respond to complaints or make sure problems were fixed on time.
Auditors blamed weak procedures, staffing shortages and the lack of an electronic tracking system.
“The medical marijuana program does have oversight, there are just some areas that need to be strengthened. The Department of Health does have oversight. I want to make that clear. There are just some areas that need to be strengthened and they are well aware of that,” said DeFoor.
The Department of Health accepted all nine recommendations and said improvements are underway.
Auditors did clarify that their sample was limited and the deficiencies reviewed do not mean there are serious health or safety threats.
