CHAPMAN LAKE – Just too much speed.
Lakeland put its outside quickness and big playmaking ability on full display in the first half, building a six-touchdown halftime lead en route to a 49-28 triumph over visiting Lackawanna Trail in a Lackawanna Football Conference crossover game Friday.
The Chiefs (3-0) burned the Lions with four first-half scores between 29 and 68 yards, with junior quarterback Jackson Pochas and senior wide receiver Chase Rosenkrans accounting for much of the damage.
Pochas ran for two scores, threw for two more and caught a shovel pass for another as No. 7-ranked Lakeland cruised to a 49-0 lead. Rosenkrans caught both scoring strikes from Pochas, for 25 and 23 yards, and flipped a short pass to Pochas, who turned the corner and went untouched on a 46-yard score.
Pochas started the impressive outburst with a 15-yard scoring run, following a 31-yard jaunt, as the Chiefs scored on the fourth play of the game.
Lackawanna Trail (0-3) quickly responded, driving 14 plays to the Lakeland 36, but the drive fizzled after a dropped pass behind the Chiefs secondary.
It took just two plays to make it 13-0 at the 2:22 mark, Evan Lonzinski scoring on a 45-yard toss play.
Rosenkrans running scoop and return of a bouncing punt created another opportunity, and Pochas hit him on the next play with a 29-yard strike at the 1:08 mark, part of a stretch that saw Lakeland score five touchdowns in seven snaps.
The lead grew to 27-0 on the shovel pass from Rosenkrans to Pochas, and 35-0 after Dylan Loomis’ 16-yard, fourth-down sack set up Luke McFarland’s 20-yard wildcat formation touchdown.
Pochas’ bubble screen to Rosenkrans covered 23 yards to up the margin to 42-0, and Pochas capped Lakeland’s outburst with a 45-yard scramble across the field after a fumbled shotgun snap with 39.9 seconds left.
Trail got untracked 20 seconds later, with Lucas Filipek drilling Ayen Fowler in stride for a 68-yard touchdown.
The Lions added the final three touchdowns in the second half, Colby Stanton bursting 35 yards on an inside reverse, followed by Cooper Castellano’s 15-yard scoop and score after a sack.
The Lions added their final score in the fourth, Adam Pettinato powering into the end zone from 2 yards with 5:59 to play.
