WYOMISSING — Lucas Myers was an All-State linebacker and scored 25 touchdowns as a junior, but you’ll never hear him take credit for making a play.
He’s been coached to understand it takes 11 guys executing in unison for a play to work properly.
All of that was on display Saturday as Myers scored three first-half touchdowns and Twin Valley executed crisply in drubbing Wyomissing 42-14 in a nonleague game at Bob Wolfrum Field.
Myers broke off early scoring runs of 42 and 56 yards and had a 48-yard run to the 7 to set up another score as the state-ranked Raiders (3-0) rolled up a 42-7 first-half lead.
“It starts with the big guys up front,” Myers said modestly after rushing for a game-high 155 yards on just six carries. “I had a couple touchdowns today, and on most of them I’m barely getting touched. It’s all those guys setting the path for me. They make me look good, and then I get the credit for it.”
The Raiders were unstoppable in the first half, piling up 388 total yards and reaching the end zone on each of their six possessions.
Twin Valley coach Brett Myers thought his team showed a lot of improvement after clawing past Susquehanna Township 17-13 last week.
“I thought our kids played at a really good pad level,” he said. “Last week, we got a little high against Susquehanna (Township) and we focused all week on firing out and doing one-on-one man blocking, and I think it paid off today.”
It resulted in a rare one-sided loss for the Spartans (0-2), who have dropped their first two games for the first time since 2016.
The loss is their most lopsided since falling to Middletown 41-6 in the District 3 playoffs in 2018; the 42 points is the most they have allowed since a 49-0 playoff loss at Middletown in 2017. Brett Myers was the head coach of each of those Middletown teams.
The win was especially impressive because it came at Wyomissing, where the Spartans rarely lose and where they’re almost never dominated. It went down as Wyomissing’s worst home loss since a 50-14 loss to Muhlenberg in 2007.
The Spartans didn’t look like a team about to be mercy ruled at the outset. They opened the game by going 75 yards on 11 plays and taking a 7-0 lead when Andrew DiFabrizio pulled in a 25-yard scoring pass from Brady Eisenhower.
Eisenhower was sharp on the opening drive, connecting on each of his three throws, including a 30-yard gain on Zander Westwood’s over-the-shoulder catch on a third-and-8.
That was the end of the highlights for the Spartans, who soon found out they couldn’t stop the Raiders.
Twin Valley needed just 22 offensive snaps to find the end zone six times.
Lucas Myers scored the first three. The most impressive came on a sweep that saw him go 56 yards for a 21-7 lead a minute into the second quarter.
“Nobody was in the way,” the Villanova recruit said of his sprint down the left sideline. “Our guys did a great job blocking it and I just had to run.”
“You get those two guards, Joey (Buckley) and Isaiah (Saunders), out there pulling with somebody behind them, it’s a pretty good setup,” Brett Myers said. “They’re both really good athletes and they move pretty well. I mean, Joey’s probably a college H-back and he’s playing guard. And Isaiah’s got the best feet of any lineman on our team.”
Quarterback Gavan Foster found Brody Majeski wide open on a slant on the next possession, Majeski taking advantage of the blown coverage for a 60-yard scoring reception to make it 28-7.
The Raiders needed just one play to score on their next possession, a 65-yard run off a counter by Grant Moser on his only carry of the day.
“It all starts with the line,” Moser said. “The line blocks that (play) perfectly. They gave me the edge and I knew I could out-run some guys.”
Twin Valley, ranked No. 6 in the state in Class 5A by PennLive.com, got its last score in the final minute of the first half when Maverik Foster ran 7 yards. That set the running clock in motion to start the second half.
The win extended Twin Valley’s regular season winning streak to 14 games. It also marked the first time Twin Valley has beaten Wyomissing in back-to-back seasons or twice in a row.
The Raiders won last year’s meeting at Wyomissing 28-6, as Drew Engle rushed for 199 yards and a pair of scores.
Brett Myers didn’t want to overplay the significance of the victory.
“It’s only Week 3,” he said. “You don’t really know who’s good yet. You don’t know if we’re good yet.”
