It was a beautiful day for running at Presque Isle State Park as nearly 1,200 runners took part in the Erie Marathon, many chasing a personal-best time on the fast, flat course.

The starting gun went off at 7 a.m. Sunday, sending runners onto the 26.2-mile course for two full loops around the peninsula.

Participants traveled from throughout the region, as well as from multiple states and countries, to compete in the annual race.

The Erie Marathon is also one of the final opportunities of the year for runners hoping to post a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon. Organizers say the course’s flat terrain and scenic setting continue to make it a popular event for both local runners and visitors from across the country.

The race is often described by participants as “flat, fast and fun.”

Colton Cassel, 28, of Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, finished first among the men with a time of 2:35:10.

Danielle Scida, 34, of Kane, Pennsylvania, was the top female finisher, completing the marathon in 2:56:41.

The race also included a special milestone for the Erie News Now team. Our Elspeth Mizner completed her first full marathon Sunday at Presque Isle.

Congratulations to all of the runners who took part in this year’s Erie Marathon.
