Alcoa Corp. is close to a sale of a closed aluminum smelter in upstate New York for a data center project. The sale is the latest in what is expected to be up to $1 billion in sales of former assets.
CFO Molly Beerman said the Pittsburgh-based manufacturer had been in talks to sell the closed smelter, known as Messina East in Messina, New York.
Alcoa is “very close to announcing a deal with a data center developer,” Beerman said during a session at the Jeffries 2026 Global Industrials Conference in New York. The Messina East smelter has been idled since 2014 and is already the site of a data center from North Country Colocation Services since 2017.
NCCS wants to expand its operations into about 355 acres near its existing site, with two data buildings of about 600,000 square feet each being constructed over the course of about two years. It would take hydroelectric power from the St. Lawrence River and not any natural gas.
