Katie Gorski scored a team-high 17 points to lead the University of Scranton women’s basketball team to a 60-35 season-opening win at SUNY-Geneseo on Friday night.

Gorski also had eight rebounds, four steals and one assist for the Lady Royals, ranked No. 2 in the d3hoops.com Top 25 and No. 4 in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Top 25.

Geneseo, which is ranked No. 22 in the d3hoops.com poll, built an 11-4 lead in the opening 6½ minutes. But Scranton’s defense held the Knights to just 24 points over the game’s final 33½ minutes.

Holy Cross graduate Kaci Kranson added 13 points for the Lady Royals. Dunmore graduate Sophia Talutto, making her collegiate debut, had nine points and five steals.

Messiah 81, Marywood 48: At Mechanicsburg,  Marywood University lost to the host school in the Messiah Tip-Off Tournament semifinals.

Megan Cavoli scored 12 points to lead the Pacers, who face Saint Vincent College in Saturday’s consolation game at 1 p.m.

Men’s basketball

At Scranton, Jon Spatola hit a jumper with five seconds left to give the University of Scranton a 57-55 season-opening win over Lehman College in the semifinals of the Hilton Scranton Invitational at the John Long Center.

Lehman used an 8-0 run to tie the game, 55-55, with 1:18 left. Following a timeout with 29 seconds left, Spatola missed his initial shot. But Brendan Carr grabbed the offensive rebound and passed to Spatola, who this time connected. Lehman had a chance to tie, but missed two free throws with one second left.

Sammy Tornabene led the Royals with 19 points. Spatola finished with 15 and Carr chipped in with 11.

In the championship game Saturday at 4 p.m., Scranton will face DeSales, which defeated Neumann in the other semifinal, 74-67. Lehman and Neumann play in the consolation game at 2 p.m.

Marywood 72, Clarkson 68: At Rochester, New York, Marywood closed on an 18-4 run to open its season with a win in the semifinals of the Nazareth University Mike Daley Memorial Tournament.

Michel Loftin led the Pacers with 24 points. Joe Macciocco added 13 points and Austin Bausman contributed 10 points.

Marywood meets host Nazareth in Saturday’s final at 3 p.m. The Golden Flyers won the other semifinal, 89-52, over Medgar Evers.
