HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — For the next few years, the State Museum of Pennsylvania will be closed.
The Harrisburg building is undergoing extensive renovations, which are expected to last until early 2029, but some of the museum’s most important exhibits are moving down the road.

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) has partnered with the Dauphin County Library System. Starting this Wednesday, popular hands-on history, art and science programs will be at the George & Hettie Love Memorial Library on South 29th Street in Harrisburg.
Events will be held monthly through December. All fall sessions are scheduled for noon. Each lasts around 45 minutes. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited, with a target audience of children in Pre-K through 2nd grade.

The PHMC previously announced the renovation project, expected to total $79.3 million, in June 2025, the biggest in the museum’s history. Additions include a new welcome experience, renovated lobby, introductory exhibit, two 15-person passenger elevators, a new event space and roof terrace on the fifth floor, new museum stores and improved visitor amenities.
