CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – Cleveland City Council voted to rename a portion of Lake Erie the “Gulf of Cleveland” at Monday night’s council meeting.
The city said this is a direct response to President Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, according to Cleveland Council member Kris Harsh, who introduced the resolution.
The “Gulf of Cleveland” will stretch from the easternmost to the westernmost points of the city’s shoreline and two miles into Lake Erie.
Cleveland’s departments are to refer to this area by its new name and include the new name on any city-generated maps and in any city documents, according to the resolution.
City Council will forward this renaming to global map-making corporations like Apple and Google and expects them to begin using “Gulf of Cleveland,” as they have with “Gulf of America” and “Lake America.”

The city says they don’t want to be “left behind” in a “deluge of rebrandings.” They are even planning to mail companies like Apple and Google to demand they change their digital maps to show the new name!
