Billy Blanks won Seven World Karate Championships
Long before he became a Hollywood actor and created the global fitness phenomenon Tae Bo, Billy Blanks was already making a name for himself as a seven-time world karate champion. The Erie native helped put his hometown on the international map through his achievements in martial arts and fitness, yet he has never forgotten where his journey began.
Over the weekend, Blanks returned home to Erie to receive one of the city’s highest honors, a Key to the City, while also being recognized by the Hagen History Center for his lasting impact and accomplishments.
The visit was more than a celebration of Blanks’ success. It was also an opportunity for him to give back to the community that shaped him. On Saturday, he participated in the PA 250 Power and Purpose Wellness Event, where he continued his longtime mission of encouraging young people to embrace health, fitness, and exercise.
Known as a master motivator, Blanks energized participants while sharing the importance of staying active and believing in themselves. His message resonated with attendees, particularly local youth, as he emphasized the values of discipline, perseverance, and purpose that helped guide his own remarkable career.

The fitness program sold millions of instructional videos worldwide and generated more than $100 million in revenue, making it one of the most successful fitness brands of its era.
While his accomplishments have earned him worldwide recognition, Blanks’ return to Erie served as a reminder that even global success stories have hometown beginnings.
