Cleveland has apparently entered the geography-renaming business.
Cleveland City Council approved a resolution Monday that renames a portion of Lake Erie the “Gulf of Cleveland.”
Councilman Kris Harsh introduced the resolution, which describes the name change as permanent. The newly named area stretches across Cleveland’s shoreline and extends two miles into Lake Erie.

The resolution directs Cleveland departments to use “Gulf of Cleveland” when referring to the designated area. City-generated maps and documents could also use the new name.
However, Clevelanders probably should not throw away their Lake Erie maps just yet.

The resolution carries a heavy dose of satire. Harsh introduced the measure in response to recent geographic renaming efforts by President Donald Trump. Those include changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Lake Ontario to Lake America.
Harsh said the resolution pokes fun at those changes while making a larger point about government decisions.
Cleveland also plans to send the resolution to major mapping companies, including Apple and Google. City leaders want the companies to recognize the “Gulf of Cleveland” on their digital maps.
As of Tuesday afternoon, neither company had made the change.
The city does not plan to spend money on the renaming effort, according to Harsh.
So, Lake Erie is still Lake Erie. But along Cleveland’s shoreline, City Council has officially given a piece of it a very Cleveland name.
