SCRANTON — Scranton Prep’s athletic field and track across from the school is getting lights.

Lighting at the Loyola Athletic Complex on Wyoming Avenue will allow for soccer, lacrosse and track sports to have night games and practices there, school Athletic Director Grey Simpson said.

Scranton Prep football will still play at Dunmore High School’s field, because the Loyola field site does not have the space to accommodate football and its larger crowds, he said.

The Loyola complex across from Scranton Preparatory School “never had lights, which as you can imagine, is challenging for our athletic teams” that use the facility, Simpson said.

The school has had to use other institutions’ facilities to accommodate all of the games and practices that the sports using Loyola field require, he said. Other sports also play and practice away from the the school, including swimming, held at the University of Scranton, and baseball and softball at Connell Park, he said.

“It’s one of the challenges for our athletic department — our facilities,” Simpson said.

The lights at the Loyola complex “will provide us an opportunity to get full games and practices in” there for soccer, track and lacrosse, and particularly for younger grades, Simpson said. “It’s also an opportunity for more community engagement” with non-school youth soccer and lacrosse sports.

The addition of lighting follows a new scoreboard at the Loyola Athletic Complex that came in spring of 2024, he said.

Crews have been working recently on the project to install the several poles containing banks of lights that are on site at the Loyola field and track.

“They’re the new style of LED lights, which will really light up the field but don’t really bleed into the background,” Simpson said.

The fall weather has been amenable for underground work to take place and advance more quickly than anticipated, and the new lighting should be ready for use next year, he said.

“It will be a nice addition to our facility there,” Simpson said.
