UPPER MACUNGIE TWP., Pa.- A B. Braun subsidiary is winding down operations in Lehigh County and preparing to hand-off some of the medicines it makes to a pharmaceutical company with operations in New Jersey. 

As 69 News reported in June, Central Admixture Pharmacy Services (CAPS) is shuttering its 503B compounding operations located at 6580 Snowdrift Road, as well as an annex less than a half mile away at 6845 Snowdrift Road. Both facilities are in Upper Macungie Township.

Now Quva Pharma has announced it has acquired “a range of essential medications” from CAPS. Quva said it expects to begin introducing selected products from the acquired portfolio in phases later in 2026 and to expand its offerings over the following six months.

Quva is headquartered in Sugar Land, Texas and has 503B manufacturing facilities in Texas and outside Bloomsbury, New Jersey in Greenwich Township.

“We appreciate the opportunity to partner with CAPS to maintain the supply of these critical medications,” said Quva CEO Stuart Hinchen, in a news release. “Health systems depend on prepared medications that are essential to patient care but difficult to produce reliably at scale. This acquisition reflects our commitment to investing in the specialized products, manufacturing capabilities, quality systems, distribution infrastructure, technology, and people needed to support these critical medication categories.”

According to the Food and Drug Administration, a 503B compounding pharmacy makes large batches of sterile drugs to be sold to healthcare facilities. They’re different from 503A pharmacies, which compound drugs according to prescriptions specific to particular patients.

CAPS is exiting the 503B sterile compounding business while remaining active in the 503A compounding business.

CAPS was acquired by the medical technology company B. Braun in 1997. A B. Braun spokesperson told 69 News that CAPS Lehigh Valley will stop shipping products to customers on Sept. 30.

Wind down activities will continue through the remainder of the year, with operations fully ceasing by year’s end.

A WARN notice posted earlier this year indicated 173 workers would be impacted by the closure. But the B. Braun spokesperson said many employees are being offered roles at Quva’s Bloomsbury facility. 

Quva Pharma acquired the 140-acre site on Route 173 in 2016. The company’s 160,000 square-foot footprint was expanded to 240,000 square feet a few years later.

B. Braun is based in Germany with its U.S. headquarters in Bethlehem. The CAPS 503A compounding business remains part of the B. Braun portfolio.
