4 the Record Host Lily Coleman recently sat down with Charlese McKinney, chief program officer for the food bank.
“The hunger is invisible, but it’s everywhere,” McKinney said while discussing the prevalence of food insecurity in the Pittsburgh area.
McKinney said one in eight of our neighbors don’t know when they will see their next meal or where it comes from.
When it comes to children, the number is one in five.
Colleen Young, the food bank’s director of government affairs, said changes to the SNAP program in recent years have had an impact on the food bank, especially as the need has increased in the community.
“We’re being asked to do more with less,” Young said.
Erin Spangler, the food bank’s director of collective impact initiatives, also appeared in the episode.
“Southwestern Pennsylvania is really unique,” Spangler said. “We’re really a patchwork. It’s urban, and it’s rural. It’s industrial, and it’s agricultural. And so, first and foremost, we have to approach each community and their own unique needs.”
