When Royals return to The University of Scranton each academic year, the arrival is hope-filled, with mission at the forefront. Earlier this month, an alumnus from the Class of 1975 visited campus to continue a long-standing tradition in Jesuit education, calling upon the Holy Spirit for wisdom, guidance and inspiration in the year ahead.
Archbishop Joseph Marino ’75 rejoined the Scranton community on Sept. 10 as the principal celebrant and homilist for this year’s Mass of the Holy Spirit with a timely reminder from the Scriptures.
“For sure that education that we receive from this outstanding University will prepare us academically and spiritually … with courage and dedication, we will make our own contribution to making our times more and more in … the vision of Christ our Lord,” Archbishop Marino said.
“And it’s worth hearing again to bring good news to the poor, liberty to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, release to prisoners … in other words, to do something visibly good.”
Archbishop Marino served in the Vatican diplomatic service from 1988 to 2019 and then served as president of the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome from 2019 until 2023.
Following the liturgy in the Byron Recreation Complex, the University community gathered for a picnic lunch on the Dionne Green and DeNaples Center Patio.
