BETHLEHEM, N.C. — Two women were arrested at a Bethlehem business following an investigation into alleged prostitution activity, according to the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrested the women Tuesday at Energy Wellness Center after complaints about suspected activity at the business. Investigators conducted an investigation that led to the charges.
According to court documents, an undercover officer went to the business as part of the investigation. One of the suspects is also accused of trying to bribe a deputy during her arrest.
Sheriff Chad Pennell said they got complaints from the community and there were negative Google reviews about the Energy Wellness Center.
“One of the Google reviews was the person stated that there was more offered than just a massage,” the sheriff told Pennell. “Alleging that there was more stuff going on.”
Channel 9’s Dave Faherty checked and that Google review called the business “disgusting,” saying workers were setting up appointments for “pretty girls” and “extra services,” so that customer left.
Yuxiang Huang, 47, of Hickory, was charged with felony promoting prostitution for profit, felony conspiracy and misdemeanor resisting a public officer. Huang is being held at the Alexander County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
Na Yu, 49, of Hickory, was charged with felony promoting prostitution for profit, felony conspiracy, felony offering bribes, misdemeanor prostitution and misdemeanor resisting a public officer. Yu is being held at the Alexander County Detention Center under a $160,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
‘Just shocking’
Faherty went to the business on Wednesday, but no one came to the door.
Cassie Fox lives next door to the Energy Wellness Center but had no idea the owners are accused of offering sex to the people who showed up there every afternoon.
“It’s always just different cars,” Fox told Faherty. “All kinds of people consistently. Never the same vehicles. I just thought it was like a nail place but apparently not.”
Tori Parker owns a hair salon down the street. Parker and her boyfriend were surprised and said they are glad deputies took action.
“Just nuts for something like that to be next door and we didn’t even know it,” Parker said.
“Just shocking as far as Bethlehem goes, because that kind of stuff just doesn’t happen around here,” said Jason Duckworth.
The investigation remains ongoing.
