Cyclists can enjoy a scenic ride on the Schuylkill River Trail while supporting the river and trail at Schuylkill River Greenways’ annual Ride for the River on Saturday. The event begins and ends at Pottstown Riverfront Park, 140 College Drive. There will be a 37-mile ride leaving at 9 a.m., a 15-mile ride at 9:15 and a 4-mile Family Fun Ride at 9:20.

There will be a party in the park after the ride with Sly Fox Brewing Company, Handel’s Ice Cream and other local businesses.

Proceeds support work such as maintaining and improving the Schuylkill River Trail, protecting the river and watershed, connecting communities to the region’s natural and cultural resources and expanding opportunities for outdoor  Register at www.bikereg.com/ride-for-the-river-srg.

Judaism talk

Rabbi Brian Michelson of Reform Congregation Oheb Sholom, Wyomissing, will give a talk on connections between the Bill of Rights and Judaism Tuesday at 6:30 in the Wyomissing Public Library, 9 Reading Blvd. The program coincides with the International Day of Democracy, as declared by the United Nations.

History program

The Sinking Spring Area Historical Society meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Borough Hall, 3940 Penn Ave. The program is “A Bird’s-Eye View of Berks County History” by Alexa Freyman, Berksiana content creator and historian using high-definition drone footage. Book signing

The Muhlenberg Community Library, 3612 Kutztown Road, Laureldale, is hosting a book signing, reading and Q&A with L.D. Zane, author of “It’s Always My Fault” Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. Admission is free but registration is requested at muhlenbergcommunitylibrary.org or 610-929-0589.

Train station celebration

There will be a celebration of the Wernersville train station’s 100th anniversary Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 at the landmark at 20 E. Penn Ave. There will be opportunities to get postcards with a special postmark to note the occasion, free postcards and posters and a visit from the Reading Company Heritage Museum’s a5A parade engine with a chance to sit in the engineer’s seat. Refreshments will be available.

Child seat checks

State police are offering free child seat checks as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week Sept. 20 to 26 at  AAA Reading-Berks  920 Van Reed Road, Wyomissing.

No appointment is necessary. Checks will be available Sept. 20 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 21 from 10 to 6, Sept. 22 from 7 to 6, Sept. 23 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sept. 24 from 6 to 2 and Sept. 25 from 7 to 11 a.m.

Oley performances

Half Moon Cafe, located in Clay On Main, 313 Main St., Oley, presents violinists the Salvaterra Sisters Sept. 25 at 7:15 p.m. in the Front Room.  The sisters perform folk, bluegrass, Celtic and classical music. Admission is free.

Also Sept. 25, the cafe presents Golden Twine on the Main Stage at 8 p.m. The string band blends folk, acoustic roots, and Grateful Dead influenced jam grass. A $15 donation is requested.

Please park in the church lot a few doors down from the venue rather than on the street.

Book fair and market

The Oct. 3 Story Lane Book Fair and Market at the Reading Public Library is bringing together local literary figures and nationally renowned authors including poet, author and performer Javier Avila. The free event is organized by Barrio Alegria and the Reading Public Library.

Ávila has published nine books of poetry and fiction and has performed his one-man show, “The Trouble with My Name,” across the country. He is slated to give his keynote remarks at 4 p.m. after poetry workshops and a panel discussion on publishing for aspiring authors. Other participants include award-winning local writers Lizette Epps and Laurel Radzieski.

There will be children activities starting at 1 p.m. An outdoor market with food trucks, performances and local vendors runs from 4 to 9.

Pottstown history

The Pottstown Historical Society meets Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in its building at 568 High St. Society President David Kerns will deliver a presentation on the story behind the Hill School wall.
