READING, Pa. – The Berks County Board of Elections voted Thursday to retain the current compensation rates for poll workers for the November general election.
Poll workers and interpreters will continue to receive $200 for working on Election Day, plus $30 for attending a training, which is held from Sept. 30 through Oct. 31.
The judge of elections and the interpreters receive $55 for attending the training.
In another matter, the board determined to keep the polling place for Cumru Township’s 5th precinct at Mosaic Church, 332 Wyomissing Ave., Shillington.
Anne Norton, director of elections, said a poll worker has complained after previous elections that the unlined parking lot is insufficient at the church.
She estimated there may be 30 spaces depending on how people park, plus some overflow parking on the grass.
Norton said the election staff has looked at moving the location to the County’s South Campus in Mohnton, but that has raised some legal questions about accessibility and about designating a polling place in an office building occupied by an elected official.
County Commissioner Christian Leinbach said if the county took the matter seriously, saying there would be numerous violations throughout the county.
Leinbach said the church situation is not ideal, and better locations exist, but making a move now could prove to be too complicated.
Leinbach directed Norton to try to resolve the issue at Mosaic Church and look very closely at identifying a new location for future elections.
