Gov. Shapiro calls for ethical AI development at Pennsylvania summit
Gov. Josh Shapiro delivered the keynote speech at the AI Horizons 2026 Summit Thursday afternoon, emphasizing the importance of responsible, safe, and ethical uses of artificial intelligence.
“I want to be clear: I am not a doomer. I don’t think it is inevitable that AI is going to take over the world, or that someone will misuse it to kill us or to do harm. But I do have real concerns, as do many Pennsylvanians and many Americans,” Shapiro said.
Shapiro said Pennsylvania has the potential to lead AI conversations due to its prominent educational institutions, including Penn State, Carnegie Mellon, Pitt, and the University of Pennsylvania.
He also stated that the federal government should collaborate with leading researchers and experts to develop strict guardrails for AI technology and its development.
