I truly hope that students, educators, administrators, faculty and all staff across Erie County and beyond are experiencing a wonderful start to the 2026-27 school year!
As a former educator, I believe in the importance of literacy and education. Books provide insight into our history and help us to understand other cultures. Books are also a way to explore what is possible. At a time when information is increasingly locked behind paywalls, curated by algorithms, or restricted outright, the public library remains one of the few institutions where access to knowledge is free and impartial exploration is encouraged.
In Erie County, we are fortunate to have an outstanding and accessible library system. With 37 branches, the Bookmobile, Library by Mail, and library reading app Libby, our Buffalo & Erie County Public Library (BECPL) system offers so many ways for cardholders to access books and other print materials.
On that note, September is Library Card Sign-up Month! This year’s theme, “A Library Card Hits All the Right Notes,” is a reminder that libraries offer something for everyone—no matter your age, background, or goals. Whether you’re checking out a classic story or trying something new, finding harmony at the library’s programs, finding your focus in a study room or vibing out in a cozy nook, or composing your future with new skills, there’s a seat in the front row at the library for you, and your library card is the ticket.
Speaking of tickets, your BECPL card means you can receive special deals to museums, theaters, cultural centers and more through the Very Important Pass (VIP) program.
Library cards are free for all residents of New York State. Visit a branch to apply or go to buffalolib.org/library-cards to sign up online.
With our students back in school, I encourage families to take advantage of all the unique resources the library has to offer. Select branches offer sports kits for patrons to borrow. Libraries can also provide help with homework and access to educator-reviewed databases.
For our little ones not yet school-aged, the Library offers free Storytime, in addition to other events focused on early literacy like musical programs, arts and crafts, play time and more! Visit buffalolib.org/kids/early-literacy.
As a former reading teacher, I was particularly saddened by the passing of Dolly Parton. Her legacy of service to others lives on through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which Erie County is proud to support. Founded to inspire a love of reading, the program sends a free book each month to enrolled children from birth through five years old.
With help from municipal and community partners, the Imagination Library is now open to families in even more zip codes across Erie County. To find out if your child is eligible, visit imaginationlibrary.com/check-availability.
I know that like myself, so many viewed Dolly as a great role model and were just as saddened by her sudden passing. I encourage all who are able to consider donating to local Imagination Library programs in her honor. Donate to United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, or to Read to Succeed.
Happy learning and happy reading to all!
