EDON — Edon’s football team toppled Erie Mason in a 56-8 effort Friday evening at Leanne Field in a Great Lakes Conference contest.
As a result, the Bombers improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league play as according to Edon head coach Jamison Wisel, this outcome it what he and his players were expecting.
“A lot of people didn’t realize how much experience we had coming back,” Wisel said. “It showed in these first five weeks. We have goals and they’re still ahead of us. We’re just trying to take it one week at a time.”
Edon’s dominance at home was present on both offense and defense. In the first quarter, the Bombers quickly gained possession with a fumble recovery by Landen Reitzel.
Quarterback Jaron Grove then passed to wide receiver Corbin Chrisman in the endzone for a touchdown. A PAT made it 7-0 Edon.
The connection between Grove and his receivers was the central piece for how well the Bombers played this game.
“In the summer, they worked hard,” Wisel said. “After practice, they get extra reps and that’s on them. We don’t tell them to stay after practice. It’s all on them and they took the leadership and it’s showing right now.”
With 9:18 left in the first quarter, Erie Mason (1-3, 0-2 GLC) was forced to punt. Shortly after receiving the ball, Grove himself scored his team’s second TD of the game to make it 14-0 Edon.
The defense for the also provided a score for the Bombers’ as Chrisman recorded a pick-six for Chrisman with 5:38 left to go, including a successful PAT. Not even two minutes of game time later, Edon got another interception that led to scoring a touchdown.
Edon wide receiver Lincoln Kiess got the interception, and a handoff from Grove to running back Parker Moyer from 17 yards out earned Edon’s fifth TD of the first half.
The score at this point was 28-0 in favor of the Bombers that included a successful PAT.
Turnover issues for the Eagles continued later on. With 4:18 remaining, another fumble committed by Erie Mason was recovered by Edon. This led to the Bombers scoring yet again to make it 35-0.
Erie Mason’s quarterback Mason Guinn had trouble all night finding open receivers against Edon’s stellar defense. The first quarter ended without the Eagles being able to advance the ball.
In the second quarter, the Bombers regained ball possession. They soon found the endzone for a score as from 10 yards out, Stantz tallied the home team’s sixth TD of the first half while rushing the football. At this point, it was 42-0 in favor of Edon.
On offense, Erie Mason was unable to find a way to score. They then turned the ball over on downs with 7:18 remaining in the first half.
Grove wasted little time and found Stantz for a 28-yard passing TD with exactly seven minutes left in the quarter to make it 49-0 including a successful PAT.
Edon got the ball back and scored it’s final touchdown of the game with a 35-yard rushing TD from the likes of Reitzel for a 56-0 advantage.
Coming out of halftime, the Eagles finally got on the board with a 11-yard rushing TD by Guinn that bit into the Edon lead at 56-8 following a successful two-point conversion.
Neither Edon nor Erie Mason scored for the remainder of the contest. The Bombers’ defense was able to hold off the Eagles from gaining momentum in the fourth, and ended up winning big at home to remain unbeaten.
Edon has some big matchups remaining on its schedule that Coach Wisel is looking ahead at but isn’t necessarily focused on entirely right now.
“We’re just trying to take it one week at a time,” Wisel said. “Obviously, in two weeks we face Whiteford, and at the end of the season we’ll face Montpelier. They are still undefeated. But, we’re not worred about those yet. We’re still trying to take it one week at a time.”
Leading the Bombers in victory was Grove who went 7-for-11 passing for 150 yards with five TDs and one interception. Stantz led the receiving corps with three receptions for 57 yards and two TDs. Grove also had three carries for 32 yards along with one TD.
Edon is on the road again in week six with a Great Lake Conference game against Sand Creek.
