Diet 7UP… or is it?

Nestled in Northern Liberties behind a vintage 7UP sign. Find it between Amina and Bell’s Flooring. I pass by it every day picking up my kids from daycare. This is the first time I’ve ever really noticed it.

The Newsroom Philadelphia is a speakeasy set up behind a non descript retro diet 7UP sign. Here is the sign, which is the secret door to the restaurant. NR is up above it, for Newsroom.Kristen Herrmann for BBGI

Unremarkable on the outside, but a spooky speakeasy inside. Even just the front door is fun! Enter through the soda machine (if you dare) to this 2,000 square foot restaurant and entertainment space that seats 60+ people. I was surprised by how big it felt when I walked in. A hidden space offering top rated food, unique decor, and incredible cocktails. They do live entertainment too, with circus artists and aerialists, DJs, live musicians, singers and more.

We live nearby, and my husband and I were invited to come check out the the Newsroom Philly Pumpkin Press Halloween transformation media preview. For six weeks only during the spooky season, you can enter through the soda machine and walk down the hallway to the literary inspired Pumpkin Press speakeasy inside.

Edgar Allen Poe Inspired Cocktails and More

Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe, patrons are surrounded by ravens, pumpkins and Sleepy Hollow surprises. A chance to enjoy the incredible food and cocktails that Newsroom Philly offers year-round, plus some fun seasonal surprises too. Normally my husband and I are beer people. I almost never order cocktails, but when in Rome (a speakeasy) right? We went for it.

With so many options on the menu, we hardly knew where to start. We opted for two of the seasonal options. ‘Tis the season right? A pumpkin spice old fashioned for Paul, and I got the pumpkin spice espresso martini. Both were perfection. There was also a Lychee Boo-tini option, the Headless Horseman, and if we were there longer, I would have definitely gone for the Raven’s Cauldron. It was SO cool, but it serves four and we were headed to see Danny Elfman at the Met afterward. (I know, right? A perfectly spooky evening.)

Oh, and there’s a really impressive food menu too. It’s Japanese fusion with so many great options. Spicy Edamame, sushi and rolls, and leave room for dessert. For our entree, my husband and I both went for the bao buns. Three to an order, chicken, beef and shrimp. They were light but filling, and so delicious with just the right amount of spice.
