History is getting a little more spirited this fall.

Christ Church Burial Ground’s Brew N’ History Tour returns Oct. 2 to 4, inviting guests to spend an autumn evening among some of Philadelphia’s most famous residents while exploring the surprising role beer and drinking culture played in early American life.

The guide-led experience explores the intersection of colonial brewing, tavern culture, politics, and daily life in the early Republic. Guests will make five stops throughout the historic burial ground, with each story paired with a curated sampling of local craft beer connected to the historical figure or tale being shared at the gravesite.

Philadelphia was not only the cradle of American liberty, it was also one of the brewing capitals of the New World, organizers said. Taverns served as important gathering places for political debate and social life, while beer, cider, wine, and other drinks were woven into the everyday lives of colonial Philadelphians.

Brew N’ History brings that culture to life through the people buried at Christ Church Burial Ground. Visitors will encounter Revolutionary-era leaders, signers of the Declaration of Independence, and other notable Philadelphians, from Benjamin Franklin to one of the city’s famous tavern keepers.

Along the way, guests will discover how drinking intersected with politics, medicine, business, social status, and the conversations that helped shape a new nation.

The 21+ experience includes a guided evening walking tour through historic Christ Church Burial Ground, historical stops featuring figures buried on site, and five curated local craft beer samples paired with stories exploring colonial brewing, tavern culture, and drinking in early America. 

Brew N’ History: Autumn Edition will take place Oct. 2 to 4, at Christ Church Burial Ground, located at 420 Arch Street. Space is limited and advance tickets are recommended.
