Pittsburgh’s Smithfield Street set for two-year redesign with wider sidewalks and new landscaping
PITTSBURGH —
Work begins Monday on a two-year project to redesign Smithfield Street in downtown Pittsburgh.
The goal of the project is to make the historic street more pedestrian-friendly and modern.
Smithfield Street, originally laid in 1784, will undergo changes including wider sidewalks, better signage, and landscaping.
The project will be completed in three phases, with the first phase focusing on the section between Forbes and Sixth avenues.
This phase is expected to be finished by summer 2028.
Renderings of the completed project show the planned updates, and the city is collaborating with tenants and business owners to gather input on what they would like to see along the corridor.
Traffic will be restricted during construction, and several Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus routes will be affected.
Starting Monday, 10 outbound routes that previously used Smithfield Street will move to Wood Street.
Temporary stops will be set up at Sixth Avenue, Fifth Avenue, and Third Avenue.
