Halloween is right around the corner and the City of Brotherly Love has a long history with spooky destinations.
With Philadelphia being so old, there’s bound to be a ghost story or a haunted hotel (or prison…) all around town. Here are the areas top spooky destinations!
Eastern State Penitentiary opened its doors in 1829, with a crazy new idea for prisons. Strict solitary confinement with limited contact to warden and guards. The idea was to encourage prisoners to reflect on their actions and work on their reform. It was the most expensive construction project in the United States. The unique design of the prison would be duplicated by around 300 prisons across the country. Eastern State is viewed as one of the world’s most famous prisons and obviously haunted as its former inmates included gangster Al Capone. Therefore, Eastern State makes the Top 5 Haunted Attractions Around Philadelphia!
The Bates Motel in Delco has long been one of the scariest haunted attractions in the area. The motel has been scaring the people of surrounding Philadelphia for over 30 years. The attraction offers a terrifying, haunted motel and a cornfield trail, all packed full of quality sets and special effects and trained actors to make sure your socks get scared off!
Now I love a good, haunted house, or spooky attraction. However, I’m not sure that I would ever be able to survive Pennhurst Asylum in Chester County. I’m a little too much of a scaredy cat for this haunted experience. Pennhurst Asylum is situated on the grounds of the former Pennhurst State School and Hospital, a place to care for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. The school and hospital closed in 1987 and it was transformed into the current haunted attraction. I’m not too ashamed to say that Creamy Acres may just be more my style! If you’re a scary cat like me, then Creamy Acres in Mullica Hill might just be perfect for you. Now… that’s not to say that Creamy Acres is not a rightfully scary attraction, because they are but there is more to do for us scaredy cats. The Haunted Paintball Hayride can be as scary or relaxing as you want it to be, a nice option. Plus the farm is open year round and offers many seasonal attractions.
Bucks County has their own spooky attraction in Sleepy Hollow Haunted Acres. It’s a 230-acre working farm that hosts three ghoulish attractions including a mile long hayride, a haunted manor and bonfires! The Sleepy Hollow Hayride is one of the longest in the region and the abandoned Field of Fright Village will leave you with nightmares. You can also reserve a bonfire pit with live music after you’ve been scared to almost death.
So, whether you want to be scared to the ends of the world, or you want to chill by a bonfire, there something for everyone at the haunted attractions all around the area. And the list doesn’t stop here, there are so many more attractions in our area so make sure to check them all out.
