Marywood University recently opened the doors of a campus in Florence, Italy, and more than 40 architecture and interior architecture students are studying there.
The Catholic university in the Green Ridge neighborhood of Scranton and Dunmore plans to expand the program to other subject areas.
Marywood International: Florence replaces an agreement with a contractor that previously handled a program in Florence. The break between the two is the subject of a pending lawsuit.
“Marywood International: Florence reflects the expansion of our commitment to preparing students for leadership in a world that demands cultural awareness, intellectual agility, and professional excellence,” Lisa A. Lori, president of Marywood University, wrote in a media release.
There is “dedicated studio space” in Florence and student housing in or near Florence’s historic center.
Florence is the capital of the region of Tuscany and a birthplace of the Renaissance. It is home to architectural landmarks such as the Florence Cathedral and the Uffizi Galleries.
In the run-up to opening the Florence campus, Marywood sued to end a contract with International Studies Institutes Inc., a Florida company. The case is pending in federal court, and the university declined to comment on pending litigation.
