St. John the Evangelist Church in Pittston provided a striking setting for live music as Lumos brought its Beatles Candlelite Experience to the city. Inside the church, hundreds of candles surrounded a string trio at the front of the sanctuary. With the church lights lowered, the candles illuminated the musicians and highlighted the architecture throughout the space.
The trio performed instrumental arrangements from The Beatles’ catalog, putting familiar songs in a completely different setting. Instead of guitars, drums and vocals, strings carried the music. The arrangements allowed the melodies behind some of the band’s most recognizable songs to take center stage.
The combination of live music, candlelight and the interior of St. John the Evangelist Church also made the concert especially interesting to photograph. Wide shots captured the full sanctuary, while close-ups focused on the musicians performing among the candles.
The Pittston performance was part of Lumos’ larger series of candlelight concerts held at venues across the United States, United Kingdom and Europe. The company often chooses churches and other historic or distinctive spaces as backdrops for its performances.
The concert brought that concept to Downtown Pittston, pairing the music of The Beatles with a memorable setting. Together, the strings and candlelight offered a new way to experience songs that have been heard for generations.
