Annie Shaw scored twice in a 39-second span of the third quarter to break a scoreless tie and lead the University of Scranton past Susquehanna University, 3-0, in the Landmark Conference field hockey championship game Saturday at Weiss Field in Scranton.
Shaw was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Shana Goldsmith added one goal and one assist for the Royals (17-3), who claimed their first Landmark title since 2021 and ended Susquehanna’s two-year reign as conference champ.
Scranton earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The field will be announced Sunday at 9 p.m.
Marywood 3, Neumann 0: At Scranton, Dariane Jones scored two goals to lead Marywood University past Neumann University and its second straight Atlantic East Conference field hockey title.
Jones was named Most Valuable Player for her performance.
Brooke Barwick added a goal and an assist and goalie Bre Marchiano made five saves to record the shutout for the Pacers (11-9), who captured the fourth conference championship in program history. They earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The selection show is Sunday night.
Women’s soccer
At Scranton, Linda Daly scored in the 53rd minute and the defense did the rest as the University of Scranton defeated Catholic University, 1-0, to capture its sixth straight Landmark Conference championship Saturday at Weiss Field.
Goalkeeper Makenzie Van Arsdale made three saves, including one in the final minute, to earn the shutout for the Royals. Van Arsdale claimed championship game MVP honors.
Scranton (15-2-3) receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The bracket will be announced Monday at 11 a.m.
Men’s basketball
At Scranton, Sammy Tornabene scored 18 points and the University of Scranton captured the championship of the Hilton Scranton Invitational with a 63-50 win over DeSales University at the John Long Center on Saturday.
Tornabene was named tournament Most Valuable Player and Jon Spatola was chosen to the all-tournament team. Spatola had 16 points, seven assists, five rebounds and three steals.
Brendan Carr finished with 10 points for the Royals (2-0), who led, 32-21, at halftime and led by as many as 22 points in the second half.
Nazareth 98, Marywood 86: At Rochester, New York, host Nazareth University used an early 13-0 run to seize immediate control and defeat Marywood University in the championship game of the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament.
Michel Loftin led the Pacers (1-1) with 23 points. Joe Macciocco added 18 points and Collin Himmelberg chipped in 10 points.
Keystone 88, VTSU Lyndon 80: At Johnson, Vermont, Keystone College won its season opener and gave first-year head coach Justin Stern his first win in the semifinals of the Vermont State University Tip-Off Classic.
Jden Golding led the Giants with 25 points and also had six rebounds and three assists. P.J. Murphy followed with 19 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Ahmodrion Jones collected 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Demetrius Thomas chipped in nine points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Keystone plays in the tournament championship game Sunday at 5 p.m. against either host Vermont State Johnson or Vermont State Randolph.
Lackawanna 91, Jefferson CC 74: At Syracuse, N.Y., David Popson scored a game-high 23 points as Lackawanna College beat Jefferson Community College in the first game at the SUNY-Onondaga Lazer Tip-Off Classic.
Noah Elias added 17 points for the Falcons (2-1) and Latrell Mark followed with 15.
Lackawanna faces host SUNY-Onondaga in its second game at the tournament Sunday at 5 p.m.
Women’s basketball
At Mechanicsburg, Marywood University lost to Saint Vincent’s College, 69-48, in the consolation game of the Messiah College Tip-Off Tournament.
Megan Cavoli scored 14 points to lead the Pacers (0-2).
Haverford 86, Keystone 42: At La Plume, Haverford College raced to a 27-point lead in the first quarter and spoiled Keystone College’s season opener at the Gambal Athletic Center.
Aaliyah Barnes led the Lady Giants (0-1) with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Football
At Scranton, Trevon Kinchen scored on a 3-yard run with 5:52 left and Oisin Matthews added the extra point, enabling No. 6 Georgia Military College to pull out a 17-16 win over Lackawanna College at Scranton Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Kinchen finished with 159 yards on 23 carries as the Bulldogs (10-1) rushed for 236 yards.
Isiah Rodriguez kicked field goals of 21, 27 and 26 yards and Jalen Fletcher had a 1-yard touchdown run for the Falcons (4-5). Quarterback Jacob Tiberi was 16 for 36 for 186 yards. He has 167 completions for a school single-season record, surpassing the mark of 157 by David Pindell in 2016. Tiberi also is 154 yards from the single-season passing mark. Hassan Akanbi ran for 127 yards on 28 carries and Kaeon Jenkins had six catches for 104 yards.
Women’s volleyball
At Scranton, Marywood University beat Saint Elizabeth University in its regular-season finale, 3-1, to secure the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Atlantic East Conference playoffs. Scores were 19-25, 25-18, 25-11, 25-19.
Genevieve Pollock had 12 kills, Leah Zambetti 11 and Taylor Howard 10 for the Pacers (5-2, 24-4). Catie Woolf contributed 18 digs, Caroline Samaniego had 13 and Julia Strohm seven. Ayla Bransford totaled 46 assists and 10 digs and moved up to fourth on the school’s all-time list in single-season assists with 841. Taylor Hallam recorded a team-high 14 points and also had eight kills, four aces, and three total blocks.
Marywood begins postseason play Thursday at 7 p.m. against No. 3 seed Immaculata.
Wrestling
At Providence, Rhode Island, Keystone College competed at the Rhode Island College Anchorman Invitational.
Nero Bono finished second at 197 pounds. He used a major decision and two technical falls to reach the final, but lost by pin to Carson Licastri of SUNY-Oneonta.
Women’s swimming
At Williamsport, Marywood University won all 14 events to defeat Lycoming College, 207-43.
Camila Gil had three individual wins for the Pacers in the 200 free, 100 free and 100 breast. Molly Englehardt won the 1,000 free and 500 free.
Scranton 168, Misericordia 94: At Scranton, Alyssa Bean had individual wins in the 100 back, 200 back and 100 fly to help lead the University of Scranton past Misericordia University, 168-94, at the Byron Recreational Complex pool.
Aviah Dahlgren won the 200 free and 200 IM for the Royals (3-2). Kimberly Gingrass won the 500 free, Olivia Thomas touched first in the 1000 free and Isabella Kane led a sweep in the 200 fly.
Men’s swimming
At Williamsport, Marywood University eked out a 98-96 win over Lycoming College.
Alex Corcoran won the 100 free, 100 breast and 200 breast for the Pacers. Sam O’Sullivan won the 100 back and Alex McCarey took the 200 back. McCarey’s third-place finish in the 200 IM cemented Marywood’s win.
Scranton 185, Misericordia 76: At Scranton, three swimmers had two individual wins each to lead the University of Scranton past Misericordia at the Byron Recreational Complex pool.
Jimmy O’Malley won the 1000 free and 500 free, Jake Brunetti captured the 100 free and 200 IM and Ethan Kwon claimed the 100 back and 200 breast for the Royals.
