A retired president and chief executive officer of Tompkins VIST Bank has been honored by the Berks County Intermediate Unit for his impact on local education.
Scott Gruber was recently named the recipient of the 2026 BCIU Outstanding Community Partner Award. The award is given to acknowledge leadership, advocacy and collaboration that help advance the BCIU’s mission and make a meaningful difference for the students, families, educators and communities the BCIU serves,
Throughout his four-decade career, Gruber provided exceptional leadership in business, philanthropy, education and community development, a statement from the BCIU announcing the award said.
Gruber has also been involved with several community organizations through which he has championed initiatives that have improved the quality of life for people and families throughout Berks, the statement said.
He was a valued partner of the BCIU through his work with Our City Reading Inc., helping to bring together business, philanthropic, community and educational organizations to pursue shared goals, the statement continued.
Gruber also played a key role in developing and launching the BCIU Education Foundation, serving as a founding trustee and current chair of the foundation’s board.
“Mr. Gruber’s dedication to collaboration, service and community engagement exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional community partner,” said Dr. Jill M. Hackman, BCIU executive director. “His leadership, generosity and commitment to improving opportunities for children and families have made a lasting impact throughout Berks County.
“Through his support of early childhood education, community partnerships and the BCIU Education Foundation, he has helped create opportunities that will benefit Berks County for years to come.”
Gruber was presented the award during the BCIU board of director’s monthly meeting in September.
