Local disabled veterans enjoyed a day out on the water thanks to a tradition that gives back to those who served.
The S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie, along with the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Home and the Erie VA, spent time out on the bay Saturday morning.
Veterans were able to enjoy quality time outdoors aboard a refurbished fishing boat that was modified to accommodate wheelchairs and other accessibility needs.
Lake Erie Ministries upgraded the boat, known as the Joanne M, making significant improvements to the program and allowing more veterans to get out on the water.
“Generally, it’s not the best day, but we’d like to get them out in the lake if we can. For safety reasons, we won’t take them into the lake today. We’ll just cruise throughout the bay, do a little fishing in the bay and marina, and when the veterans come back, the staff will provide a picnic lunch,” said Chuck Miller, director of S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie.
