LEBANON COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — A Central Pennsylvania man was convicted Tuesday of shooting his ex-wife five times last year, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
After a two-day trial, a jury convicted Darrell Long, 63, of North Lebanon Township, of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and harassment, the Lebanon County District Attorney’s Office said.
“The Defendant committed a planned, extremely violent attempt on the victim’s life. He shot his ex-wife five (5) times – it is clear he wanted her to die, but he failed. The victim survived not because of her strength and her will to live. I am grateful to the jury for their service. I am grateful the victim and her son will be safe from the Defendant’s grasp for decades to come. I intend to request the maximum consecutive sentence the Court may impose.” District Attorney Pier Hess Graf said in a statement Wednesday.
Long is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 9.
Before the woman was shot inside the home along N 7th Street in North Lebanon Township on March 25, Long beat her with a handgun, prosecutors said. Long then shot her twice; when she tried to get the gun from him, he shot her a third time, nearly “obliterating her hand,” the DA’s Office said.
She was able to throw Long to the floor and tried again to go for the gun, which had just jammed, but Long was able to fix the gun and shot her for a fourth time in her right arm. The DA’s Office said she then fell to the floor and began to crawl to the bedroom and was shot again, this time in the right leg.
Eventually, the DA’s Office said she was able to barricade herself in her bedroom and call police, and Long then left as he realized officers were coming and their teenage son would soon be coming home as well.
After police and EMS arrived, she was treated and rushed to the hospital. Prosecutors said she had to undergo four different surgeries and that a bullet is still inside her.

Prosecutors also detailed how Long had sent over 20 threatening text messages to their son in the month of the shooting. Prosecutors said he was angry after his ex-wife tried to cut off contact with him after they got divorced.
Witnesses testified during trial about the threats from Long and how he even bragged about the shooting and that he called himself a “hero,” according to the DA’s Office.
Long remains in Lebanon County Prison, where his bail is set at $500,000.
