Efforts are continuing behind the scenes to secure the future of three Erie Independence House properties that remain scheduled for tax sale next week, leaving dozens of residents with disabilities concerned about what comes next.
The properties, located on West 5th Street, McClelland Avenue, and West 2nd Street, are still listed for tax sale on Monday. Financial difficulties facing the operator of the homes have created uncertainty for approximately 40 residents who rely on the facilities for housing and support services.
A check Thursday confirmed that Erie Independence House has not filed for bankruptcy protection, and the three buildings remain on the tax sale list as of now.
Residents were notified of the situation in a letter sent last week by Executive Director Tim Finegan. In the letter, Finegan sought to reassure residents that they would not lose their homes despite the ongoing financial challenges.
Still, for many residents, that assurance has done little to ease concerns as the tax sale date approaches. Questions remain about the long-term future of the properties and what measures may be taken to ensure the residents can continue living in their current homes.
Those involved in the discussions have not publicly detailed what options are being explored, but efforts to find a solution are reportedly ongoing as the deadline draws closer.
For now, residents, families, and advocates continue to await answers while hoping a resolution can be reached before Monday’s scheduled sale.
