A major milestone was celebrated at Mercyhurst University as the institution officially commemorates its 100th academic year.
Students, faculty, staff, and members of the Mercyhurst community gathered Thursday morning for the university’s 30th Annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, a longstanding tradition that marks the beginning of the fall semester.
This year’s service carried special significance as it took place during the university’s centennial year, giving the campus community an opportunity to reflect on a century of education, service, and impact in Erie.
The Mass also honored the mission of the Sisters of Mercy, whose vision helped shape the institution from its earliest days. University leaders said the celebration served as a reminder of the faith, dedication, and perseverance that helped establish Mercyhurst and allowed it to grow over the last 100 years.
“A great deal, especially a great deal for the sisters who are here because they mean so much to us, the sacrifices they made to start this originally up here,” said Greg Baker, Vice President of Admissions and Legal Affairs. “This was just farmland. The city didn’t extend this far yet. This was quite a thing that the sisters did. They did not have the resources, but they had a lot of faith and a lot of imagination about what Erie needed to start a high school and a college for women.”
University officials say the centennial celebration provides an opportunity to honor the institution’s history while looking ahead to its future and continuing its commitment to serving students and the Erie community.
