We’re never ones to say no to more taste of the south in Pittsburgh, and North Side-based Roux Orleans brings a taste of New Orleans to the city!
With dishes like gumbo, po’boys, and grilled catfish, the Chateau neighborhood now has a new fast casual option in the otherwise industrial-forward district.
Roux Orleans Offers a Taste of New Orleans
Tucked away amongst the industrial complex in Chateau near Bicycle Heaven, Roux Orleans offers a quick dining experience for food to be enjoyed on-site or to go. As we live nearby, we visited for a lunch takeout order and had our food within minutes of ordering.
The menu here is as cajun as they come with gumbo, po’boys, and even gator on the menu (with the latter only available in limited quantities- we expect these could sell out early on any given day when available).
We started off our meal with an order of the chicken and andouille gumbo alongside a side of jambalaya. The gumbo came with a dark roux served with Cajun seasoning plus chicken and sausage and the jambalaya was a spiced rice dish on the side.
Admittedly, I didn’t realize that the gumbo already came with a heaping serving of rice on its own, so we ended up with plenty that made for ample leftovers. While we appreciated the amount of chicken and sausage in the gumbo, both of these dishes felt like they needed just a bit more spice intensity all around.
We accomplished this by topping both with an extra dose of jerk sauce that we purchased as a side which really kicked it up a notch (or three). With that sauce, these packed a punch and were otherwise mild without- so be sure to pick up some extra sauces for these all the same here.
Perhaps our favorite dish of the meal was the Shrimp Po’boy which was served with small gulf shrimp with pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise- plus an extra side of remoulade for good measure.
The shrimp were seasoned quite nicely and were served in quite a large quantity that the sandwich was overflowing with them. The pickles added a nice tang to the sandwich for a flavor combination we wouldn’t have expected but enjoyed quite a bit. However, the mayonnaise was a bit on the lighter application side of things, so that extra order of remoulade was a good choice to make the po’boy a little more saucy- don’t skip that if you like a bit more.
Alongside the sandwich, we had an order of honey rosemary fries which had subtle hints of honey and rosemary with neither being a dominant flavor that worked. Did we dip the fries in the sauces that we added to our order? Absolutely, but we did enjoy the nuanced flavors of these all the same.
Although we thought some of the dishes could’ve used a bit more intensity in the seasoning department, the po’boy was quite the winner alongside some delicious fries, and we are looking forward to returning to try their gator po’boy (yes, you read that right- although note it is limited every day) as well as the catfish as these were two other menu items that caught our eye. That said, the menu of available sauces on the side is plentiful, and you’ll do well to add a few that catch your eye when dining here as well.
Now we’re going to go back to thinking about that po’boy with extra remoulade and are looking forward to snagging a gator variant one day soon.
