The Exeter School District is ending its tradition of hosting a bonfire as part of its annual Homecoming Parade celebration after the fire Thursday night ignited with unexpected force, sending debris into at least one spectator, officials announced Friday.
The district issued the following statement to the Exeter community Friday afternoon: “We recognize that the bonfire is a tradition in the community and that this decision may be unpopular for some; however, we will always prioritize safety for our students, staff, families and community members.”
Officials said as was the district’s custom, the bonfire was lit before Thursday night’s parade by Exeter Township Fire Department members on the district’s Reiffton campus, officials said.
“We are aware of at least one person who was struck with debris from the bonfire, and was evaluated on the scene, and thankfully, did not appear to sustain serious injuries,” the message said. “We are grateful to all of the emergency responders and bystanders who quickly offered assistance and help.”
