The Erie VA Medical Center celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing Hispanic and Latino veterans whose service and sacrifices have not always received the attention they deserve.
The Erie VA Medical Center brought veterans, staff, and community members together to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, with a focus on honoring Hispanic and Latino service members whose contributions have not always been fully recognized.
“It shows the progression. It shows how far we’re coming along because, yes, there is more diversity. There is more celebration. There are more people coming out and talking about their stories. Yes, it was hard at one point, but through that resilience and strength, I have transcended. Because of that, I’m able to have a voice,” said Dr. Rocky Escajadillo, a program manager at the Erie VA.
Today’s program centered on honoring heritage, celebrating service, and inspiring future generations to serve and protect the country.
Speakers shared stories about the impact Hispanic and Latino veterans have had throughout history, including their role in the Revolutionary War and their support of George Washington.
Those contributions, both historical and present-day, have helped shape the nation and the veteran community.
The event also created space for people to share personal connections and the pride they feel in their heritage and military service.
“My father came over from Costa Rica and served in the Army. I just buried him this year at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, which was what he wanted. He was a patriot and very grateful to be here in the United States and to have served,” said Brandy Cortes, an attendee who works with the Erie County Drug and Alcohol Bridge to Recovery Hub.
