Pittsburgh community continues to mourn Dr. Idris Evans UPMC doctor fatally stabbed

Dr. Idris Evans, a physician known for his exceptional care, was fatally stabbed, leaving patients and neighbors grieving his loss.

Dr. Idris Evans, a beloved physician known for his compassionate bedside manner, was fatally stabbed, leaving his community in mourning.

Erron Fletcher said he was at work when he learned of Evans’ death.

“My heart dropped. I actually was sitting at work,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher, whose 19-year-old son Aiden was treated by Evans, said the news brought him to tears.

“I actually teared up because of what we went through recently, you know, with him being the attending doctor for my son,” Fletcher said.

Last April, Aiden required surgery for a perforated stomach and significant blood loss. He has undergone more than 80 surgeries at UPMC Children’s Hospital and said he had never met a doctor like Evans.

“The thing that stood out best about him was his bedside manner was second to none,” Fletcher said.

Fletcher described Evans as a compassionate and attentive physician who went above and beyond for his patients and their families.

“And I feel like as a dad, as a parent whose child is in the hospital, that’s everything you could ask for,” Fletcher said. “Like he always addressed us by our first names. Any questions? And every morning when they met in the team round, he would make sure that, because I had to work — I stayed off work a few days and then I had to go back to work — he made sure I was on FaceTime.”

Fletcher said the loss of Evans will be deeply felt.

“The hospital lost a good one. A very good one. And it’s going to suck. Like it was a very tough day at the hospital that day. It’s still a tough day. It’s still tough times there now. But the world lost a good, good person,” Fletcher said.

Neighbors expressed their sorrow over the tragedy.

“Just terrible thing. Of course, everyone feels tremendous compassion for them,” one neighbor said.

A GoFundMe has been set up to support Evans’ family and funeral expenses.
