A Pittsburgh man was arrested Monday afternoon after police say he assaulted a woman, punched and pepper sprayed a construction worker and threatened construction crews who were working on a neighbor’s house.

Police arrested and filed multiple charges against Matthew Dougherty, Pittsburgh Public Safety said. A criminal complaint has not yet been filed in the state’s online judicial system.

Officers were dispatched around 12:45 p.m. to the 2100 block of Lowrie Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood for reports of a man assaulting a woman outside of a residence. The woman is either a current or former domestic partner, said Public Safety spokesperson Cara Cruz.

The man, Dougherty, retreated inside to retrieve a gun from his home before confronting two men who were doing construction work on his neighbor’s house, Public Safety said. Dougherty pulled the gun and threatened one of the workers, who was using a jack hammer.

Dougherty then put the gun inside his residence and went back outside, where he continued assaulting the woman, according to Public Safety. Dougherty then began punching and pepper spraying a female construction worker in the face, prompting two more workers to intervene.

He got in his car and drove around a corner, striking a male construction worker. Dougherty fled from his vehicle on foot, Public Safety said.

Medics took the male construction worker to a local hospital in stable condition. The woman and the female construction worker were evaluated on scene by medics.

Dougherty’s vehicle was recovered from the scene.
