The Pittsburgh Penguins announced their plans today for a year-long celebration of their 60th season as an NHL franchise during the 2026-27 season, headlined by a new commemorative anniversary logo that will be worn on player helmets all season long.

The retro-inspired logo features a large “60,” with the Penguins’ current skating penguin logo sitting inside the loop of the “6,” an arrangement the team says was heavily inspired by the 25th anniversary logo the Penguins wore back in 1991-92. Below the 60 are three angled stripes in the team’s colour scheme of black, white, and gold — these three stripes are an homage to both the three rivers of Pittsburgh as well as to the three stripes on the wing of the “Robo Penguin” logo used from 1992-93 through 1998-99. Arched above it all are five gold stars representing the team’s five Stanley Cup championships, with each star fashioned after the four-pointed marks of the American Iron and Steel Institute logo (that same family of steel-industry stars we see on the Pittsburgh Steelers logo). As the team says, the new 60th anniversary logo is “a love letter to what came before.”

The logo will be worn on Penguins players’ helmets during every game this season; it will also be worn as a shoulder patch on their jerseys for the home opener against the Montreal Canadiens on October 3 (seriously, why not all season?)

Game-worn jerseys, featuring the patch, from opening night will be sold through the Penguins Authentics site later this season; replica versions of the patch itself will be available behind section 104 at PPG Paints Arena and online, with proceeds going to the Penguins Foundation.

Sixtieth anniversary fun isn’t limited to the logo. The Pens will give away a 60th anniversary lapel pin set to fans attending their November 5 game against Boston, an anniversary-logo kitchen apron on November 25 against Calgary, a 60th anniversary poster on December 18 against Seattle, and an anniversary-patterned shirt on March 14 against Detroit. There are also special anniversary-themed ticket packages which include shirts for an 80s Night (November 3 vs. Vegas), 90s Night (December 18 vs. Seattle), and Y2K Night (March 9 vs. Ottawa), plus, in what may be my most favourite team giveaway, a limited-edition Penguins 60th Anniversary Zamboni Gravy Boat, available with select November home games.

The Penguins entered the NHL for the 1967-68 season, as part of the league’s “second six” expansion, joining alongside the California Seals, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, and St. Louis Blues. If the 60th anniversary season ends up like their 50th, that anniversary logo’s gonna need a sixth star by June.
