LOWER ALSACE TWP., Pa. – A driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries after hitting an HVAC unit and causing a gas leak at a Berks County Redner’s on Wednesday morning, officials say.

The incident occurred in the 800 block of Carsonia Ave in Lower Alsace Township around 10:50 a.m., police say.

Officials on scene say a vehicle crashed into a large air handler unit, causing an active natural gas leak.

Police say an additional engine was requested to assist with the evacuation of customers in the store.

Crews say they assisted with the evacuation, secured power, secured the gas, and metered the building.

Emergency response crews stayed on scene until UGI confirmed that all leaks were secured and the vehicles were removed, authorities confirmed.

According to Redner’s officials, the store is open for business, as all of its equipment is electric, meaning the fryer, ovens, and hot water are fully operational.
