The Pennsylvania State Police have opened a new cadet selection cycle for individuals seeking to become state troopers.
The new hiring round follows $16.2 million in state budget funding secured by Gov. Josh Shapiro for four additional cadet classes in 2026-27.
The investment will fund approximately 380 new troopers as part of a state effort to place 2,000 additional law enforcement officers on the beat.
To date, state funding has supported 16 cadet classes to train more than 1,600 state troopers, along with grants through the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to help recruit and retain nearly 700 municipal police officers across the Commonwealth.
Applicants for the state police cadet position must have a high school diploma or GED certificate and a valid driver’s license from any state. Candidates must be at least 20 years old at the time of application and they must be at least 21 years old and under age 40 upon entry into the academy.
The Shapiro administration eliminated the college credit requirement for applicants in August 2023. Since the policy change, six cadet classes have completed training without the requirement and applicant numbers increased by 69% in 2025 compared to 2022.
Cadet training at the state police academy lasts approximately 28 weeks. Coursework covers state crimes and vehicle codes, physical fitness, police vehicle operation, firearms and specialized equipment. Cadets are promoted to trooper upon graduation and can earn approximately $103,319 after five years of service. Under current state leadership, approximately 673 cadets have graduated and joined the department.
Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens serves as the acting commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police. He urged prospective applicants to consider joining the agency.
“Every single day across the Commonwealth, the men and women of the Pennsylvania State Police answer the call to serve, protect and make a meaningful difference in the communities we serve,” Bivens said. “A career with the Pennsylvania State Police offers purpose, challenge and the opportunity to grow while making a lasting impact on the lives of others. If you are ready to be part of something larger than yourself and join a team united by a commitment to service and excellence, we encourage you to apply and start your journey with the Pennsylvania State Police.”
Applications for the current cadet hiring cycle must be submitted by Nov. 27, through the Commonwealth’s employment website.
