An attempt at street justice resulted in one person shot in the leg and another assaulted during a chaotic scene with gunfire and eight people charged Monday in Upper Darby.
About 2:50 p.m. police were called to the area of Marshall and Hampden Roads for a report of a shooting in the alley of the 400 block of Woodcliff Road. One person was shot in the calf.
In the alley where the melee occurred police found a dozen 9-mm cartridge cases, a gold extended magazine and four fired bullets on the basement floor and door of a home.
The shooting stemmed from an earlier incident in which subjects learned a family member was assaulted about 1:45 p.m. and wanted to confront the individuals they believed were involved.
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt gave this account:
Keyonda Freeman’s daughter was assaulted by Robbins and two friends, Staton and Everett Bey. Instead of calling 911 and allowing the police to handle the situation, Keyonda Freeman called her brothers Joseph Freeman and Ahmir Freeman, along with her sons Donte and Tustin Vick and two adult cousins, Bernhardt said.
The Freemans and the cousins live in Philadelphia. Her sons live with her on the 400 block of Glendale Road in Upper Darby Township. The group confronted Robbins at his residence, Bernhardt said.
The group arrived loaded with weapons. During the confrontation Ahmir Freeman is alleged to have shot at Simir Everett-Bey, who was wounded in the calf and transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
A victim from the earlier fights was found at Marshall and Hampden Roads suffering from chest injuries and was taken to Lankenau Hospital.
Bernhardt said there is no place for street or vigilante justice.
“Let me make one thing very clear: There is no way this kind of nonsense is going to happen in Upper Darby Township, without severe consequences,” he said. “If you choose to act like this, you will be arrested, charged, held accountable, and prosecuted by our district attorney.
Bernhardt said it’s a disgrace that a mother and a family would act this way, emphasizing that the community will not tolerate people taking the law into their own hands.
Ahmir Freeman, 26, of Philadelphia is charged with attempted murder. Police say they used video to identify him as the shooter.
He was arraigned Wednesday before District Justice Wendy B. Roberts who set bail at 10% of $500,000, which he has been unable to post and was taken to Delaware County prison to await an Oct. 19 preliminary hearing in front of District Justice Harry J. Karapalides.
Bernhardt praised patrol officers who responded to the chaotic scene as well as the Detective Division and Criminal Intelligence Unit. Police were able to identify everyone involved within a half hour.
Keyonda Freeman, 43, was charged with riot and disorderly conduct, her brother Joseph, 40, was charged with firearms violations and riot, and Everett-Bey, 20, was charged with assault and fighting. They are not yet in custody.
Jeremiah Stanton, 21, of Upper Darby was charged with making terroristic threats, assault and harassment.
Tristen Vick, 19. of Upper Darby was charged with riot, assault and held on 10 percent of $80,000 bail. Donte Vick, 20, was held on felony riot, assault and related charges and held on 10 percent of $100,000 bail. Ronald Robbins, of Upper Darby was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and harassment and held on 10 percent of $350,000 bail. They are being held at the county prison.
