Trueman took interim charge for the game with Colin Doyle after Alexander and Chris Lucketti made the move to Preston.

Pre-match reports suggested that Michael Duff is set to be named as the permanent successor although it is understood that no offer has been made to anyone at this stage.

Trueman was pleased with his team’s response to a challenging week – and confirmed that the former boss had been in touch.

He said: “I got a text just before the game from the gaffer wishing me luck. So, yes, that was nice.

“They’re great people. Obviously, he’s a great manager and Chris is fantastic with the group and in the sessions etc.

“So, it’s disappointing to see them move on, but we can’t fault them in any way. They’ve got an opportunity to manage a team that he’s got a close relationship to and it’s an opportunity to manage in the championship.

“We’ve got to respect that decision, but as a club, we’ve just got to move on.

“It was a difficult week at the start. Obviously, when the news broke, some players were a little bit unsettled, didn’t know really what was going on and who was taking the team.

“But then we had a good conversation on Monday with the squad. Obviously, I stepped in along with Colin and continued the work that Graham left.

“It’s been a good week in terms of the players. They’ve just got on with business and that’s the key.”

Trueman is waiting to be told what happens next and was due to speak to Ryan Sparks and David Sharpe over the weekend.

“I need to speak to Ryan and David and see the situation. Obviously, I’ve been in a bit of a bubble and concentrating on preparing for Reading.

“I think in the next couple of days I’ll find out a little bit more. But I’m pleased with how the team’s played today.

“It shows the mentality of this team that it could quite easily derail them a little bit with the news. But they just continue to do the right thing.”

Jake Beesley’s first goal of the season gave City the perfect start but Reading rescued a point in the second half when they struck from a long throw.

Trueman added: “I thought we started well, on the front foot, and got the goal.

“But then we knew Reading were going to cause us problems. They’re a good possession team and scoring a lot of goals at the moment.

“Obviously, it’s a set play that’s done us but we’re pleased that we minimised their efforts on goal.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game. We knew we were going to suffer at times, but we’re good at that.

“We’re defensively switched on. We deal with balls into the box well and obviously, as a unit, from front to back, we were solid and hard to break down.”
